The Caveman Diet - What Will it Do For Me?

,
Paleo Diet:

The so called "cavemen" diet, sometimes more romantically known as the hunter gatherer diet, or the Paleolithic (Paleo for short) diet, is being seen by many as the natural diet of our ancestors, and one that our bodies and genes were originally programmed to thrive on. Certainly the notion of the "caveman" diet strikes chords of being the diet of destiny; what our ancestors ate was surely what Homosapiens were designed to eat.

The Caveman Diet - What Will it Do For Me?

This romantic notion of a Caveman type of diet would appeal to those who champion natural foods and who frown upon fast and processed foods. After all, the notion of seeing a fat caveman or woman somehow seems rather ludicrous. But hunter/gatherer is perhaps a more apt description of the ancestor to which this type of diet refers. Most prehistoric men and women of the period we allude too, did not dwell in caves but were actually nomadic hunter/gatherer types that roamed the plains and jungles of those times. The descriptions we have of the inhabitants of this era relate of a fit, lean muscular and healthy race who did not suffer from any of the chronic diseases that plague so many of us here in modern times.

The "Caveman" diet is not of course exactly what our ancient ancestors would have eaten, but is the modern day equivalent of those foods. It consists of a variety of lean meats and seafood, together with fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. By following the diet that mankind was specifically engineered to eat, we improve of overall health and well being. Our skins become clear and healthy, our natural athletic prowess improves, and many of the conditions and illnesses that are related to our metabolisms simply disappear, because our immune systems become naturally enhanced.

Not only is the caveman diet the healthiest diet you can pursue, but it is actually meant for you. By consuming the correct foods, you can reduce the incidence of many potential diseases including things like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, various type of arthritis and many types of everyday complaints such as gastrointestinal problems, skin and hair conditions, and many more.

When you stop to think about, it really is a matter of pure logic. All of the nutrition that we need to live healthy lives and to maximize our well-being, is available in plentiful supply in the foods that Mother Nature naturally provides for us. Why else would mankind have been developed by nature herself in the first place? If we were not to be able to sustain ourselves on the rich bounty that she provides, we would surely have become an extinct species many thousands of years ago.

It is no coincidence that so many diets that are being promoted and recommended by the world's nutritional scientists and gurus today mostly take their basis on the natural foods that the Caveman or Paleo diet consists of. If you want to live your life to your highest natural and healthy potential, you should find out all you can about the Caveman diet with a view to adopting and following it yourself. There is plenty of information available on the Internet. Seek and ye shall find!

Fundamentals of a Healthy Diet

,
Paleo Diet:

You may be wondering what the best diet for losing weight is as you've likely been bombarded throughout the years by so many different pieces of dieting advice.

Fundamentals of a Healthy Diet

Well I find that the best method is, as in this case and many others, the simplest and most tried and true method.

That is the one that's been the standard go to for however many years, the food guide pyramid.

As much as some people think that government agencies don't have our best interest at heart, the numerous health experts at the Department of Agriculture who put together the daily food guide pyramid knew what they were doing.

Check out the USDA food guide pyramid at their website to get a better idea of what I'm trying to say.

There are so many diets out there telling you a quick and easy way to lose weight but many have adverse effects and are not generally healthy in the long run.

There's no carb diets, (Atkins, Paleo) There's the south beach diet, there are vegan/raw diets and so many others but who's to say if they are really all that good for you?

I find the best diet is a normal USDA recommended diet with a conscious awareness.

That is, the awareness of what you are putting in your face.

The best way to be aware, is as I've said, to record what you eat.

When you are conscious of how many calories you are taking in, you naturally want to be able to have more calories in case you want to eat something special. This forethought leads to you searching for lower calorically dense foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains which are naturally better for you.

It's amazing what happens when you make the initial investment in your health.

Magically and before you know it, the benefits and the methods begin to snowball into a perpetual consciousness and ease of good health.

At this point it takes almost no effort to continue being healthy.

All it takes is that initial investment of a few weeks to form some new habits and you're good.

That is the hardest part, after that it's a breeze.

In summary, I think the best diet you can be on is a conscious and sustainable one that lines up with USDA recommended daily values.

In all honesty, fad diets aren't sustainable and aren't going to cut it in the long term.

10 Healthy Snacks For Weight Loss and Wellness

,
Paleo Diet:

Contrary to popular belief, snacking is actually very beneficial. It helps to refuel your body, maintain blood sugar and energy levels and control your appetite.

10 Healthy Snacks For Weight Loss and Wellness

Healthy snacking will help your body get the nutrients it needs and help you avoid overeating at meal times.

Indulge in these guilt-free snacks. Remember we encourage an anti-inflammatory, low-glycemic, paleo-style diet for weight loss and wellness. A body must get healthy before it can lose weight.

1. Fruit and Yogurt Parfait.Organic plain yogurt is best. Yogurts with added flavors are higher in sugar. Instead, flavor your yogurt with fruit. Blueberries are an excellent choice as they have a lower glycemic content that will help balance blood glucose and insulin levels.

2. Romaine Lettuce Wrap With Organic Turkey and a Slice of Raw-Milk or Skim Mozzarella Cheese.

Romaine lettuce contains the highest nutritional and fiber content of all lettuce. Turkey is 94% protein which helps you to lose weight by boosting your metabolism and decreasing hunger. Adding raw milk grass-fed cheese not only adds flavor but also adds calcium without any harmful hormones or preservatives. A great source for grass-fed wild meat, game and poultry is at U.S. Wellness Meats.

3. Veggie Sticks With Cottage Cheese Dip. Non-starchy vegetables contain almost eight times the amount of fiber found in whole grains. Fiber is essential for a healthy digestive system. Fat-free organic cottage cheese makes an excellent low calorie snack.

4. Shrimp Cocktail Shrimp is 90% protein. Try dipping it in some cocktail sauce for a low calorie, high protein snack.

5. A Handful of Nuts. Walnuts are the best choice as they're rich in protein and fiber but they also contain a high dose of omega 3 fatty acids (good fats) as compared to other nuts. Healthy fats help lower your risk of disease. Omega-3s are anti-inflammatory, meaning they help prevent inflammatory diseases such as stroke or heart disease. People who are overweight are actually suffering from an inflammatory condition.

6. Celery Sticks and Almond Butter. This is a great combination of protein, monounsaturated fat and energy. Almond butter is a healthier alternative to peanut butter as it contains no added ingredients or preservatives and better fats. (peanuts are a legume not a nut)

7. Deviled Eggs. Eggs are very high in protein which makes them a great snack. My Guacamole Deviled Eggs are a great high-protein healthy snack with good fats.

8. Herring Wraps. Buy a few tinned containers in a few different flavored sauces such as tomato or tangy mustard, herring fillets are high in omega 3 fish oils. Don't but if they are in soybean oil. Try wrapping them in a few leaves of romaine lettuce.

9. Banana Nut Pop. Dip a banana in plain organic yogurt and roll in walnuts or coconut. Freeze. Yummy!

Bananas are a great source of fiber and potassium. They do have a high sugar content so eat in moderation. Coconuts have anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties and are one of the best sources in the world for MCFA (medium-chain triglyceride fatty acids)

10. Lemon Tuna Avocado Snack. Halve an avocado and scoop out the flesh. Mix with lemon juice and tuna. Serve in the shells. Good protein, good fat.

Avocado's are high in monounsaturated fat and potassium. Tuna is a great source of protein, omega-3 fatty acid and is very nutrient-dense. Protein builds muscle which in turn burns more calories to help you lose weight.

And here's your BONUS snack idea....

***Smoked salmon.

Don't get salmon that's been smothered in brown sugar. Salmon is one of the best sources of protein and healthy fats on earth. Always try to buy wild-caught and not farmed raised (fed grains).

Paleo Diet - Getting The Back to the Healthy Basics

,
Paleo Diet:

For thousands of years our ancestors in every continent on the planet found all of the nutrients their bodies had evolved to require in the things in nature that surrounded them. In this Paleolithic period of our history, they thrived and were very healthy. In most cases their brains were larger than ours, they were generally taller than we are, and they were far more physically fit than most non-athletes are today.

Paleo Diet - Getting The Back to the Healthy Basics

Most scientists agree that the diet that fueled their health and vitality was quite different from that of most modern westerners, although genetically we remain 99.99% identical to them. Around one-third of the food they ate was wild game they hunted and fish, and the two-thirds balance was derived from berries, seeds, fruits, melons, nuts, bulbs, stalks, roots, leaves, and flowers that they gathered. Meat and fish gave them the essential fatty acids and protein, and meat made up about 65% of their energy intake.

The domesticated, grain fed cattle we eat today is quite different from the wild game our ancestors ate, in that domestic cattle average around 30% total fat, in place of the less than 10% total fat average of wild game. In addition, domestic meat from grain fed animals contains mostly saturated fats, rather than the higher percentage of polyunsaturated fats found in wild game. This means that we now have four times less omega-3 fatty acids than our hunter gatherer ancestors had, and about one and a half times less monounsaturated fat. The human body needs a certain amount and quality of fat for certain processes. Vitamins A, D, E, and K, for instance, cannot be absorbed without it.

Nuts and seeds added other oils and essential fatty acids to our Paleo ancestors diet, and berries and fresh fruits gave them complex carbohydrates and other nutrients. A large part of their diet consisted of gathered vegetables and plants - leaves, flowers, stalks, bulbs, and roots. These were all consumed fresh and raw, which gave them the most benefit from the nutrient rich content and greatly benefited their immune systems.

Grains and small seeds, while they were around, were never ground into powder and cooked for consumption during this Stone Age period. That came only with the advent of agriculture and the domestication of animals, two of the most prominent things that marked the beginning of the Neolithic period. These things also began our journey into the mechanized processing of grains and other foods, the addition of pasteurized dairy products into our diet, and our exorbitant intake of sugar and simple carbohydrates. Ultimately, these factors, among others, are what have pushed modern humans toward heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, celiac disease, obesity, and many other "civilized" ailments.

At the end of the day one thing is certain, the diet of our Paleolithic ancestors is still the diet that is best suited for our metabolisms today. We thrived for countless centuries consuming only the things that were naturally available, and our bodies needs for maintaining health and vitality remain the same.
